Murder Investigation Leads to Arrest

In Malkangiri, authorities apprehended a suspect on Sunday linked to the murder of a 25-year-old woman from Chhattisgarh. Her remains were discovered in a forest area close to Rengabandh village on April 12.

The case, which initially raised significant alarm, has been resolved thanks to a collaborative effort between the police forces of Odisha and Chhattisgarh.

According to Malkangiri's Superintendent of Police, Vinod Patil, the deceased has been identified as Mangaladei Nag from Murchhunda village, while the accused is Umesh Nag.

Patil revealed that Mangaladei and Umesh, who hails from Pandum village in Sukma district, had been romantically involved for over a year. Their relationship included several intimate encounters, which resulted in Mangaladei becoming pregnant.

On March 20, the couple visited the Malkangiri District Headquarters Hospital, where an ultrasound confirmed the pregnancy. However, their request for a medical termination was denied by the medical staff, as stated by Patil.

Unable to cope with the situation and unwilling to take responsibility, Umesh allegedly lured Mangaladei to the forest and took her life. He is also accused of attempting to destroy evidence related to the crime.

Following the discovery of the body, police initiated an investigation with the assistance of a forensic team and the Sukma police. The victim's identity was confirmed after officers visited her home and presented personal belongings found with the body to her family, who recognized them.

Umesh was subsequently taken into custody and presented in court on Sunday, according to the Superintendent.
